Grabenhorst Picnic 2009 – Day 1

We drove off this morning at 10 AM on the first leg of our trip to the annual Grabenhorst family picnic in Dayton, Oregon.

Our route took us over Chinook Pass to Yakima and then down to Goldendale, Washington. It was a scenic drive with mountains and valleys. The clouds were too low to see Tipsoo Lake and it was cold with snow on the ground. Seeking a better spot for our picnic lunch, we proceeded over the pass to the Cedar Springs camping area in the Bumping River recreational area. Although the sign said, “No Day Use” we appropriated a table near the Bumping River and enjoyed our lunch followed by a short trail hike near the river.

After lunch we continued on through Yakima and down to Goldendale that is beautifully situated among golden hills. We checked into the Quality Inn and found that only McDonald’s and an adjacent Mexican restaurant were candidates for dinner. We chose to eat at Ayutla’s and the food was very good.

After dinner we watched Jack Lemon in, It Should Happen to You on the baby laptop.
